About us...

Our performances are dramatic staged readings of contemporary short-story fiction in a theater environment.

The goal of Literally Speaking is to create a venue in which writers of literary prose fiction living in and around New York's Capital Region can bring their work to the public while also providing entertainment value. The intended audience is, simply, people who like to read.

By prose, we mean the ordinary form of written or spoken language, without metrical structure. By literature we mean that combination of imagination and philosophy expressed in such a way that we are compelled to call it art.

Fiction, even short fiction, typically requires more words than poetry and more effort by the reader than drama requires of its audience, given that drama is staged and visual. An audience gathered for a reading of short fiction is required to sit longer and listen harder. In a public reading, the talent of the reader is as important as the quality of the fiction. Collaboration with Theater Voices and the Hudson Valley Writers Guild addresses these concerns.

Through its membership, the Hudson Valley Writers Guild has access to the growing community of writers living in the Capital District. Theater Voices, through its own collaborative network of performing artists, connects us with veteran stage performers who can bring to life the meaning of written words through the expressive powers of theatrical voice.

Literally Speaking™ has no commercial interests. We do not charge authors
for having their work performed, and our performances are free to the public.
